Start of the school year

We are now starting our third week of the school year. There are a few books that I am looking forward to and have been enjoying with my 2nd grader and a few fun activities we're doing with my kindergartener. One thing new that we're doing this year is that once a week the kids are drawing a small picture of something that they read that week. They get to choose so it's fun to see what they choose to draw and which books they choose. I got this idea from Celeste Cruz at her joyful lessons blog. She has lots of great ideas and inspires me with all she does with her kids. We are still doing our Monday family outing days to parks, museums, and other places of interest. It's one of our favorite things about homeschooling- being able to go to parks when they're not so full of people! In a city of over 10 million people, the parks can get super full!

My 2nd grader made a map of the two rivers of China on his own using geometric pieces. This wasn't part of our class- the kids were playing with these pieces and he decided to do a map like this. It's great to see that even outside of class the kids are still thinking about what we read in class.

My youngest (preschooler) has loved some puzzles we inherited from families that moved away this last year. He loves putting one puzzle on top of another like this and asked why Hawaii and Alaska are so different?

We were doing nature journals outside but my oldest decided to do this instead.

One of our favorite parks just outside of the city that usually has very few or no one there.

A new park that we got to explore recently. It's not new, but new for our family.
